Faizal Nazaruddin - Guitar

Faizal Nazaruddin

What is your full name and what instruments do you play?

Faizal K. Nazaruddin is playing the guitar.

When and where were you born?
I was born in 1970 and grew up in various places.

Where did you grow up?
In various places.

What got you into playing music?
It's the last language everybody understands without the need for translation. Music, regardless of genres, taste or preferences is universal.

Do you have any other passions besides for music?
Snowboarding and Art.

What, or who, are your musical influences?
Early on, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen made me take the guitar seriously. Mick Ronson and The Edge taught me that less is often more. Musicians in general: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, U2, Brian Eno, Queen, David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Prince, Guns and Roses, The Crue, Slipknot, early Metallica, early Megadeth, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, The Cure, Duran Duran, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, John Digweed, Sascha, George Acosta, Ferry Corsten, Dave Seaman and many more fabulous European DJs I can't recall at the moment.

Who has been the biggest musical inspiration of your life?
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - the original rock and roller!

Would you say music as a whole is getting better, gotten worse, or has remained the same?
There are musicians and then there are celebrities. Most
musicians will toil away in obscurity and will not get their due. Celebrities are a dime-a-dozen and are available at MTV, VH1 and other assorted corporate outlets. Look elsewhere, like dive bars, local gigs, and street corners for things that are new and original. Having said all of that, there are no guarantees where one can get "good" music because it all boils down to taste. Listen to what turns you on and that's all that matters! Stay the fuck away from media and self-appointed hipsters when looking for music to listen to, films to watch or art to appreciate. Fuck what's cool, just be yourself and enjoy the music you like. The state of music should reflect the state of your mind and emotion, not what's selling or who your neighbor or the various, asshole, so-called hipsters are currently listening to.

How did you come to join Shrew?
Casey and I are the founding members. We were previously in a band called Bone Gruel. I love Shrew, because the other three goofballs are just such sweethearts. They have very little ego or at least enough for it to be classified as healthy. Shrew is a space and platform to be creative as well as get great therapy, too.

What is your favorite part of being in Shrew?
The fact that Christian, Chris and Casey more or less share the same outlook on what Shrew was; what it is and what it can be. But, most important is the mutual respect for each other and our healthy zest for life.

What is your favorite Shrew song and why is it your favorite?
In the Waking, due to its simplicity, the emotion it evokes (in me anyway): a feeling of getting lost and being found.

What would be your dream venue to play?
Royal Albert Hall. One is allowed to dream, but for now I'll settle for The Maltese, Shrew's home away from home.

Who would you love to accompany on your dream playbill and why?
Oh, anyone is fine so long as they are nice.

Where would you like to see Shrew in the next 5 years?
Hopefully, still making music at any level!
